WHO Sustainable Development Goals

Welcome to Tairawhiti's first escape room powered by Taiki E! Next Gen.

A group of local rangatahi from the Taiki E! Next Gen Entrepreneurship Club came up with the idea to create an escape room to combat the lack of entertainment for people in the area. Next Gen Escapes was born and for the last 12 months they have been working hard to develop their business idea and skills to bring it to life. A big focus of Tāiki e! Next Gen is the Sustainable Development Goals and generating positive impact in our community.

WHAT IS AN ESCAPE ROOM?

Learn more about how we operate.

What is it?

An escape room is a room of connected puzzles and other methods to build a story around a particular theme. A small team works together to complete the tasks in order to escape the room within a specific time limit.

Who can play?

It is best played in a team of 3-4 players but you can take on the challenge with a partner if you wish.

Players need to be age 6 and up. Those under the age of 15 require a paid adult with them at all times. The room does require a range of problem solving skills and can be complex for young players.

The room is compact so accessibility can be challenging if you require space to move.

How to play:

Make your booking online via our website. Arrive 15 minutes before your time slot to avoid wasting some of your booking time. Take part in a short safety briefing. Enter your room and the time will start. Work together to escape the room before the time runs out.

Salvation Rising

The year is 2050 and the effects of climate change have been more catastrophic than originally foreseen. Humans have been forced under ground where the carbon dioxide remains at levels habitable for humans.

You have been given information about an old climate change researcher who was working on an invention to save humanity.

You have one hour to figure out the secrets to obtain this invention in order to save humankind.

Suitable for new players, a great room for the whole family with challenges for all ages!

Under 15s must be accompanied by a paying adult. Play in teams of 2-4 people.

Got Questions?

  • What is an escape room?
An escape room is a game in which a team of players are locked (not actually locked in!) in a room and must work together to discover clues, solve puzzles, and accomplish tasks that will allow them to escape in a limited amount of time.
  • Where is it located?
The Escape Room is located inside of Treble Court at 29 Peel St, Gisborne 4010. You will see the big yellow Tāiki e! Next Gen sign, located next to the Gisborne Volunteer Centre.
  • Can we just turn up and play without a booking?
No. All players must use the online booking system in advance of play through the website. We’re very busy so booking is the best approach!
  • How long does a game last?
Game time is a maximum of 60 minutes, but you should arrive 10 minutes before for a game briefing.
  • Is it scary?
No – there aren’t any scary surprises or zombies jumping out of cupboards. It’s a fun, engaging atmosphere where you’ll end up laughing most of the time.
  • What happens? What do I need to do?
You should arrive 10 minutes before the start of your game time to have a briefing with our Game Masters. When everyone in your group has arrived, our Game Masters will brief you on game rules and take you into your room. Once you are in your room, you have 60 minutes to solve a mystery and find the way out of the room by working through a series of puzzles. It’s a live escape game so you are in a real room – it’s not played on a computer! Game Masters will be watching you on camera, and you can ask them for hints along the way if you get stuck. Remember–you’ve only got 60 minutes to solve the mystery!
  • Will I be locked in a room?
No. Our rooms are never locked and you are free to leave at any point. Leaving the room does not end the game or stop it
  • What if I don’t escape in time?
Our Game Masters will give you the option of being guided through the remaining puzzles to escape, or if you would prefer to come back and have another go you can exit the game at this point and make another booking to try again. Some people like to come back and solve it themselves, others want to know the secret!
  • What happens if we get stuck on a puzzle?
Our Game Masters are watching you on camera and are there to help when you get stuck. The Game Master will ask if you would like a hint, or alternatively you can ask for one at any time.
  • Do you have different escape rooms?
We only have one escape room. The task – escaping the room – is the same in all our rooms, but all rooms have totally different mysteries and puzzles. Teams often choose to return and swap rooms as a rematch. We have two identical Old school rooms for those teams who are very competitive.
  • What if I am claustrophobic?
The room is small so this could be an issue for some. Talk to us and let us know, we want to accommodate as much as we can to make it an enjoyable experience. Leaving the entry door open slightly is always an option, we want everyone to have fun!
  • What are your Opening Hours?
    Tues - Fri 12pm - 7.30pm Sat - Sun 10am - 7:30 Strictly by online bookings only.
  • COVID 19 Policy
Our rooms will always be private. As there is only one escape room, you will not have any contact with other guests. We are following national and local guidelines. All of our staff are vaccinated. Masks are encouraged but are not mandatory. We have a QR code for contact tracing purposes available for scanning. This is optional. If you are feeling ill or have a cough or sneeze we ask you to reach out ahead of time so we can reschedule or offer a refund - do not attend if you are sick. Escape Rooms are not worth getting sick over, or getting others sick.
  • How much is it to book?
Our Escape Room is $78 for 2 people ($39 each), $105 for 3 people ($35 each) and $120 for 4 people ($30 each). There is a max of 4 people. Payment must be made at the time of booking. Bookings are required ahead of time. Last-minute accommodations can be made based on availability so we recommend either booking online or give us a call!
  • Are your rooms private?
Our games are always private for no extra cost! The only players in the room with you are the ones you bring along.
  • Is there an age limit?
Players under the age of 15 must be accompanied by a paying adult. Our Escape Games are designed for players aged 12 and older. Please note that some parts can be quite the challenge! While we recommend 12 and older, players 6 and over may certainly join in the fun!
  • Is alcohol allowed?
We have a firm policy that intoxicated people will not be admitted into our escape room. If you are intoxicated we will ask you to leave and your game will be forfeited. No refunds for intoxication will be given. Food and drinks are not allowed to be taken into our escape room. Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the premises. Having fun is the main goal of our rooms, we recommend saving the victory shots until after your win!
  • How many people can play?
Our escape room has a maximum capacity of 4 players - this means that there is enough fun for everyone. If you have a larger group we can split the groups and have one team compete against the other. Get in contact with us and let us know what you need and we’ll try to accommodate as best we can.
  • How do I make a complaint?
Your feedback is important and helps us improve. We'll do our best to fix your problem and make sure it doesn't happen again. Before making a complaint, please try the following. Talk to us. Contact our staff and tell them your concerns. If you're not satisfied with the solution offered by a staff member, you can ask for your concerns to be escalated to a team leader. The best way to file a complaint is using our complaints form. This gives us the information we need to properly address your issue. On receiving this information from you, we'll review it and contact you if we need anything more.
